Formulation and Development of Policy (cont'd)

I am still in the topic of developing and formulating policy especially in the safety, environmental, health and quality which is my own area of discipline.

You can name the policy as CASHES, QHSE, SHEQ, HSEQ etc. these are just abbreviations to suit individuals or companies. The essence of the policy is to state what the company is doing towards its workers health and safety, the environment as well as giving quality to customers.

These are the highlights of points to consider when developing these policy.
Safety and health policy- state is the goal; stating how important your workers are; involving their commitment by making sure they follow the laid down procedure in doing their job; assessing the risk, criticize negative and praise positive efforts towards safety.

Environmental policy- goals are to protect and conserve the environment; doing the environmental impact assessment of all activities.

quality policy- state the adjective to qualify the kind of quality you offer; state how well you meet your customers requirements.

These highlights will serve as a guide to formulating your own HSE policy.

Developing and Formulating Health, Safety, Environmental and Quality policy (part 1)

Policy is a principled behaviour that is deemed to be desirable or necessary. It is an advantageous conduct that helps in curbing different kind of attitudes. We human, as we know are different in our thinking, way of living, upbringing, education just to mention few of the norms. Therefore, there should be a guideline that can make ways to be streamlined towards achieving a particular goal. These guidelines will make out attitudes to almost be in line with each other. In this view, policies are made.

There are different kinds of policies ranging from economic policy, financial policy etc. I, as an Health safety and environment expert want to highlight the development and formulation of health, safety, environment and quality policy for companies.

Questions to be asked when developing a safety policy includes
i. what goal does the company has in relations to accidents leading to injuries and fatality?

ii. what procedure do the company have in place in for stopping or reducing accidents?

iii. what are the safe process of the company taking to perform their operations?

iv. does the company do their operations in a straight forward manner or through short cut?

v. what do the company value most, lives or the job?

vi. if the operation is not safe, what does the company have in place for this?

Lets take company XYZ as a case study.
Formulating safety policy for XYZ can be like this:
'we at XYZ say no to injuries and fatality. This we can achieve by putting in place the right way to do our operations with no corner cutting. We analyse the work, if its not safe , we do not do it because the lives of our workers are valuable to us.'
This is a simple way of formulating safety policy. it already incorporates all the questions asked. It is simple!

Have a great working week!
