Formulation and Development of Policy (cont'd)

I am still in the topic of developing and formulating policy especially in the safety, environmental, health and quality which is my own area of discipline.

You can name the policy as CASHES, QHSE, SHEQ, HSEQ etc. these are just abbreviations to suit individuals or companies. The essence of the policy is to state what the company is doing towards its workers health and safety, the environment as well as giving quality to customers.

These are the highlights of points to consider when developing these policy.
Safety and health policy- state is the goal; stating how important your workers are; involving their commitment by making sure they follow the laid down procedure in doing their job; assessing the risk, criticize negative and praise positive efforts towards safety.

Environmental policy- goals are to protect and conserve the environment; doing the environmental impact assessment of all activities.

quality policy- state the adjective to qualify the kind of quality you offer; state how well you meet your customers requirements.

These highlights will serve as a guide to formulating your own HSE policy.

Developing and Formulating Health, Safety, Environmental and Quality policy (part 1)

Policy is a principled behaviour that is deemed to be desirable or necessary. It is an advantageous conduct that helps in curbing different kind of attitudes. We human, as we know are different in our thinking, way of living, upbringing, education just to mention few of the norms. Therefore, there should be a guideline that can make ways to be streamlined towards achieving a particular goal. These guidelines will make out attitudes to almost be in line with each other. In this view, policies are made.

There are different kinds of policies ranging from economic policy, financial policy etc. I, as an Health safety and environment expert want to highlight the development and formulation of health, safety, environment and quality policy for companies.

Questions to be asked when developing a safety policy includes
i. what goal does the company has in relations to accidents leading to injuries and fatality?

ii. what procedure do the company have in place in for stopping or reducing accidents?

iii. what are the safe process of the company taking to perform their operations?

iv. does the company do their operations in a straight forward manner or through short cut?

v. what do the company value most, lives or the job?

vi. if the operation is not safe, what does the company have in place for this?

Lets take company XYZ as a case study.
Formulating safety policy for XYZ can be like this:
'we at XYZ say no to injuries and fatality. This we can achieve by putting in place the right way to do our operations with no corner cutting. We analyse the work, if its not safe , we do not do it because the lives of our workers are valuable to us.'
This is a simple way of formulating safety policy. it already incorporates all the questions asked. It is simple!

Have a great working week!

Importance of Personal Protective Equipment PPE

Personal Protective Equipment PPE are the apparatus worn by individuals when doing task for the protection from hazard.

PPEs are not the main way of dealing with hazard. elimination ,substitution , isolation, engineering and administrative control of hazard are the basic ways of controlling hazard. ppe comes next just to protect the individual since there could be little risk still remaining.

The following are the PPE worn during operation:

1.Safety overall -used in covering the body from hazard

2. Eye Goggle- used in covering the eyes

my Bestfriend is the safest.....

I want to take this time out to talk about a close friend that did so much for me. He has been with me and made me safe in all my endeavour. Without Him, my knowledge about the safety procedure is null. Without Him,i am really unsafe everywhere i go, in whatever i do, in which way i act, in whatever think. i have grown to know Him that He is the safest, i mean safest entity anyone, anybody as long as your alive, can get to know.

He turns all my own personal unsafe attitude, behaviour and act which lead to my living in unsafe condition into a very safe actions thereby i now dwell under a very very safe condition.

He has been my safety before i was conceived; giving birth to on Friday January 18, 1980; through my toddler age, adolescent age, youthful age , till today. I learn so much about this friend since i was young but my growing up made me know Him personally.
He is called my Safety, Fortress, Guide, Protector, Shield, Rock, Provider, Saviour, Counselor, Director,World, Life, Wonders, Best, number One Faithfulness, ...just to mention few, but overall, He is my one in all and all in one.

The name of my bestfriend is Jesus Christ!
Do you know Him? if no, you need to know Him.

If yes, is He your friend? Make Him your friend today! as it is said, taste it and see that the Lord is good.

Jesus Christ loves you!

Why Talk So Much About Safety.... (part 3)

I have talked about the monetary and legal imperatives of safety as in safety helps maximize money and also makes someone avoid wahala (trouble). This 3rd part makes safety helps in accepting the company by the populace. This is the social imperative.

Imagine a scenario where a company has gotten zero fatality, negligible percentage of incidents leading to accidents, in fact no history of a very fatal accident, how do you feel people will talk about the company?

For this reason, I give the oil and gas sector a laudable plus in the way they have handled the safety approach. Everyone of us wants to work in that sector because of not only the salary, but the way the work environment is been determined in a safe manner.

Therefore, if a company puts safety as a priority in its approach to process, it gains all the advantage as well as everyone will want to be associated with the company.

Why Talk About Safety (part 2...)

Safety as said in part 1 helps maximize the fiscal imperative ie money maximization. So in this part 2, i am asking who wants wahala?

Wahala is a slogan in Nigeria meaning trouble. so who wants trouble?
Let us imagine a scenario of a very hardworking and productive young man in a production company without safety process. he works on a rolling mill every now and then, he is used to it. In short the rolling mill can be said it is his companion. He does not switch off this rolling mill everytime he wants to clean it.he has always been successful doing this. But on this faithful day, it went the other way.

Alas, while doing same routine and he was not kitted on his personnal protective equipment (PPE we talk about that as we go on) he lost all his fingers while cleaning the machine. there was panicking in the company, production was stalled, everyone running helter skelter, eventually, the company was closed for that day due to that incident.Later, there now arise the matter of insurance claim which lead to legal matter. This is what i meant by wahala.
If safety process has been in place, he will never have cleaned the rolling mill while its working. the message of him been the priority will stick to his brain and he would not have done that unsafe act.
If safety process was in place, it will lead to less or no insurance claim, legal issues and also the company will still be productive (fiscal imperative) for that day.
That was why i said who wants wahala?

Why Talk So Much About Safety...... part 1

Safety as been defined as freedom from accidents which should be d top most priority of most companies, . The reasons for this will be discussed in the sequence of 'why talk so much about safety'.

First and foremost, imagine a scenario of having an asset of $1m, everything is moving on smoothly, i mean the business is going fine and you were told to put a fire safety mechanism of just some thousand bucks, but you refused. an incident now occurred where the staff mistakenly forgot to put off the appliances at the end of the working day, there was a little spark, which leads to fire, then an outbreak. you are about losing million buck for just a few thousand bucks to invest in a department of safety!
We all do not pray for incidents like this or some others that make us lose bucks, but if we are conscious of what we ought to first invest in which is safety, there will be no loss or even minimal loss to the asset. This makes safety a fiscal i.e monetary imperative. it helps in minimizing or stopping loss thereby making income to keep flowing steadily with just a little investment.

Safety Awarenes...

Safety Awareness is like almost everything else we do . . . it is learned, not instinctive. We aren’t born with awareness for safety concerns . . . in fact anyone who has a young toddler or grandchild knows this first hand as they see them going around doing unsafe things constantly.

We learn through various means. Some learn by doing, others by watching, some by reading. Others learn by their mistakes or the mistakes of others which is one reason we post and talk about near misses and direct hits that we’ve had here and at other companies and locations throughout the country.

So how do you know you’ve developed good safety awareness? Here are some good examples of behaviors that suggest you have good safety awareness:
§ Before you begin a job, you consider how to do it more safely
§ You make sure you know how and when to use personal protective equipment
§ As you work, you check you position to reduce strain on your body
§ While you are working, you become aware of any changes in the area—people coming or going, jobs beginning or ending
§ You start talking with others about safety

Monitor yourself today and see if you’ve got good safety awareness. If you don’t, one of the best ways to gain further awareness is to step back and take a hard look at your or a coworkers actions as they are performing a job. Watch for risky actions. You will learn and if you’re watching a coworker . . . share those observations with them to help them go home safely each and every day.

its been a while.... sorry! but still on safety

happy new year of the 2013!

sorry its coming late but its better than never...5 months into the year, hope we are having a very safe year? how about our attitude to network and environment? i guess its a safe attitude, if not please endeavour to be safe in all we do!

Safety as it is said is not we brought from heaven, we should be taught in all aspect of our lives how to be do things in a safe manner. i mean from toddlers to primary age, secondary age up to adult age. it keeps going until we are no more.

So on this my new year note, though late which i have apologised, i want us to do all we do in a protecting our own lives, surrounding lives, including human, animal and plant lives as well as the.non living things. in short lets learn to protect our environment,o
