Fire Safety 1

-->
Fire is defined as a rapid combination of two or more combustible substances with oxygen resulting in the production of heat, light and smoke.

Elements of fire
1. FUEL: this is anything that can burn. It exists in solid, liquid or gaseous form.
Solid- paper, woods, textiles

Liquid- Diesel, kerosene, petrol

Gas- Methane, carbon, propane, butane

2.
-->HEAT: the attainment and maintenance of a certain minimum temperature to ignite fuel or any combustible materials. Sources of heat could be from hot pipes, sparks, naked wires, thunder lightening, friction, naked flames.

3.
-->OXYGEN: It is the air that supports combustion. It is a colourless gas forming 1/5 or 21% of total volume of air. It is a supporter of life.

 Causes of Fire
-->
There are 3 main acts that causes fire:

1. CARELESNESS- this is the act of not paying attention or proper attention to a particular thing of importance that could lead to fire. It is estimated at 75% causes of fire outbreak. It could be- overloading of sockets, boiling rings and kettles unattended to, children playing with matchsticks, using of candles, not switching off appliances

2. WILFUL ACT OR ARSON- This is a deliberate or intentional act of setting on fire by persons. This could be violent political activities, intention to defraud insurance company, riot.

3.  NATURAL DISASTERS- These are unforeseen circumstances beyond human control resulting into fire outbreak. These could be thunder strikes, volcanic eruption.

 Effect of Fire
-->
 Loss of life

 Means of revenue generation stopped

 Injuries

 Loss of properties and documents

 Disruption of business/ production activities
-->
High cost of renovation

Governmental adverse policy

-->
Extinction of fire

1. Cooling

This is the removal of heat by the application of water in form of jet or spray thus reducing the heat of the temperature of burning mass below its ignition temperature in other words called limitation of heat

2. Smothering

This is the sufficient reduction of oxygen content in the atmosphere within the seat of fire by the vigorous discharge of CO2, DCP, Foam or by the use of fire blankets, dry sands. This is also called limitation of oxygen

3. Starvation

This involves the removal of the combustible materials within the neighbourhood of the seat of fire. This is the limitation of fuel
